The Royal Ballet School
2017 Opera Holland Park Season
The Royal Ballet School
Summer Performances

The Royal Ballet School, founded in 1926 by Dame Ninette de Valois, is one of the world's great centres of classical ballet training. Its alumni include, among many others; Margot Fonteyn, Kenneth MacMillan, Antoinette Sibley, Anthony Dowell, Anya Linden, Jonathan Cope and Darcey Bussell. It is the official school of the two Royal Ballet companies and, each year, students take up contracts with these prestigious organisations as well as other top UK and international ballet companies. Thus, their end of year shows are a must-see event for all ballet fans. It is with great pleasure that we welcome The Royal Ballet School back to Holland Park for four spectacular performances in 2017. These performances will feature dancers from right through the school up to final year graduates in a mixed programme and will provide a real glimpse into the future of ballet in this country and beyond.

Alice
2017 Alice
Alice
A family opera by Will Todd and Maggie Gottlieb
After four brilliant years, and more than 50 performances since its premiere in 2013 and following the hugely successful sell-out run at the Royal Opera House's Linbury Theatre, we are pleased to announce that we will be returning to the magical gardens of the Yucca Lawn in Holland Park in 2017.

11-year-old Alice is jolted out of her bored daydreams in the school holidays when she meets a talking rabbit who insists she follow him to a mysterious Wonderland… In this fantastical place Alice comes across a number of peculiar characters, including a relaxed caterpillar, a happy cat, a depressive hare, a white knight, a romantic duchess, a mad hatter and a sleepy dormouse, and learns that all is not well in Wonderland: a mysterious (and very cross) Queen of Hearts seems distressingly keen to chop off everyone’s heads…

Kat’a Kabanova
2017 Opera Holland Park Season
Kat’a Kabanova
You can’t help but sympathise deeply with Kát’a as she journeys through internal conflicts of love, adultery, innocence, guilt. Janácek’s distinctive score brings the drama to life effortlessly, replete with traditional Czech folk styles and lyricism. Fuchs’s production was hailed as “not simply the highlight of Holland Park’s season, [but] the highlight of the summer” (Anna Picard, Independent).

Zaza
2017 Opera Holland Park Season
Zaza
Lyrical, sumptuous and poignant, the opera follows the life of Parisian music hall singer, Zazà: her career, her eccentric friends and her passionate love affair with Milio Dufresne, an acquaintance to whom she grows hopelessly attached. At least, until Zazà discovers that he is not only married with a child, but unwilling to give up his comfortable family life. With its lush orchestration, evocative dance styles and infectious rhythms, Leoncavallo’s music bursts with colour. A rarity not to be missed.
